Magic in Words

These ramblings consist of my opinions and observations of the world of magic and mentalism,  gleaned from over thirty years of professional performances.

They could be completely wrong and I reserve the right to change my mind.

MIND-READING THE JOURNEY BEGINS

WIKIPEDIA DEFINES MENTALISM AS:

“A performing art in which its practitioners, known as mentalists, appear to demonstrate highly developed mental or intuitive abilities. Performances may appear to include telepathy, clairvoyance, divination, precognition, psychokinesis, mediumship, mind control, mind-reading, memory feats and rapid mathematics. Hypnosis may also be used as a stage tool. Mentalists are sometimes referred to as psychic entertainers.”

I wish I had known that before I started, it would have saved me a lot of time.
For the past 25 years (ish) I have made my living both part time and full time as a Mentalist, mind-reader and psychic entertainer. The journey so far has been great, but where did it all begin.

It’s 1973 I am 9 years old and on my TV is a tall handsome man wearing a tank top and pair of flared trousers. He points to a lady in the audience and tells her she is afraid of pigeons and she screams out loud, and that’s it, I am hooked on all things mind-reading.

This was a show featuring Uri Gellar who was massive in the 1970’s. Now no matter what you think of Uri Gellar that one show prompted a lifelong study (so far) into the world of magic, psychic phenomenon and the ability to read minds.  I have spent nearly forty years since that day in the early 70’s reading everything about mind-reading, mentalism and psychic entertainment I could lay my hands on. For years as a child I spent every Saturday morning in my local library scouring the shelves for books that would teach me the secret to reading minds.

But instead of finding one simple secret, I discovered a complex mix of human psychology, body language, mnemonics, subliminal influence, hypnosis, ancient symbology and the tricks of magicians.

I have performed and lectured all over the world, published numerous books and routines and invented a number of props and effects for the mind-reading performer.

In this blog I hope to share some of my insights and ideas into this fascinating subject, so if you have an interest in the psychology of the psychic entertainer, then hopefully you will find something to get your mental juices flowing.

I’ll keep you posted.
